Non-lethal self defense and extremely effective, pepper spray will temporarily blind an attacker when properly sprayed in the facial area and eyes. If properly contaminated with pepper spray, an attacker will not be able to open their eyes for 10 minutes
Legal Issues and Security Guards
As a security officer or guard you know that when you or someone is in immediate danger of serious bodily injury or death, you can employ what force is necessary to prevent this from happening. In less than lethal situations, you may be required to defend yourself or subdue and arrest a law-breaking subject using the appropriate amount of force. Pepper spray is one of the most commonly used non-lethal options. Since the 1990's, nearly every state in the USA has authorized the use of pepper spray by law enforcement and civilians.
Many countries, including Canada, do not allow any type of tear gas to be used by civilians and security personnel except as a bear or dog repellent. Many police departments worldwide however employ it as part of their arsenal of non-lethal options.
Security officers and guards should check with the various agencies concerned before carrying and using pepper spray. This, of course, applies to any weapon or tool. First, does the client allow the use of pepper spray on their property? Will they back you in a court of law if there is a lawsuit? Second, does your own company (if contract security) authorize its use? Will they back you or leave you hanging? Thirdly, does the municipality, state or province, or country where you work allow its use? What are the laws, regulations and requirements that you must meet before carrying and using pepper spray? Are there special licenses and/or courses you are required to take? It is better to check this all out before you attach the canister of OC to your belt! It could save you a load of grief.
